COLLAR FORMING MACHINE Manual collar forming in the conventional way is an unrewarding, tedious task that exposes workers to residual heat and fumes from the anode sealing process. Stimir's Collar Forming Machine is a fully automated collar forming and attaching system for aluminium smelters using anode stub protection on their anode assemblies. The compact size and rapid processing makes it an ideal choice for replacement of existing collar forming methods. Stimir built in 2001 a Collar Forming Machine for Isal, Iceland, that replaced an earlier machine which had reached the end of its working life and for Steg, Switzerland, Stimir refurbished Collar Forming and Collar Filling machines who were from another supplier; both machines had been installed in 2002 but had never worked correctly, Stímir was called in to use expertise to rectify the problems these machines were causing.

Stimir's original design principles for the Collar Forming Machine included accuracy, efficiency, speed and compactness. The Collar Forming Machine uses stepping motors for critical movements instead of pneumatic controls used in other designs, thus increasing precision. The design prevents the formation of slack in the collar material, thus achieving optimal material usage. Sensors on the machine detect the rods and their exact position on the conveyor, permitting collars to be quickly attached to the stubs whilst the rods are in the vertical position.

Stimir's Collar Forming Machine can handle collar material made of aluminium or heat resistant cardboard. The collar material arrives in coils and the Collar Forming Machine automatically feeds the material, cuts it into the appropriate length, places the collar around the rod stub and securely locks the ends with a punched locking imprint.

Stimir's Collar Forming Machine is able to handle all combinations of anode sizes and rod yoke configurations and fulfills all safety regulations regarding worker safety and machine part durability. It was designed to be a robust and independent working unit and as such does requires very little operator and maintenance attention, saving both the overhead and resources.
